This copy of Windows is not genuine

P

PT Myers

I purchased my copy from Best Buy the second week it was released and all
has been well until about 3 weeks ago. I started getting error messages that
my copy was not genuine. In the lower right corner of the screen it stated:

Windows Vista (TM)
Build 6000
This copy of Windows is not genuine,

One of the error messages is that "Windows Aero is not working" forgot what
the other was.

I have followed the links with the error message and have followed the
instructions reactivated my Windows Vista Ultimate twice now to no avail.
The computer properties says that the copy is activated, but, when I go to
revalidate the windows I get the not genuine message again. Thought about
calling customer service but, they want $60 to tell me what is wrong with
their soft ware. That and I saw on one message board that the individual
that had called in had been told to purchase another copy and that would fix
the issue. That response does not sit well with me.

Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks

PT

Can't help you but you can help yourself, as Tiberius said, "Someone
here had the same problem" so do a search for it.

My apologies if you already know what follows, this is just in case you
don't:

To search a news group:

Most newsgroups including this one are archived on Google Groups so go
to http://groups.google.com and enter
microsoft.public.windows.vista.general in the "Find a group" window
about 1/3 down the page and select this group from the list that
appears. Now enter your search term in the "Search this group" box at
the top of the page, you might try "This copy of Windows is not
genuine" or similar entries.

See what shows up.

found it

here is what another user reported.. it was hard to find this since it was
some time ago:
This is actually a bug with the new drivers (May 12th) and seems to be
limited to updating the sata drivers for Nforce based boards using the
Silicon Image chipset for the Sata.

In my case, Windows still reported has being activated, but was reporting
not being Genuine. I went round and round trying to get it re-activated,
but I couldn't de-activate it to re-activate it. When I tried to pass the
Geniune test, it would tell me I need to Activate windows First. I finally
found a way to deactivte my install., I just added another Gig of ram and
I got the activation option. I re-activated Windows, it says it was happy,
but still reported my version has not being Genuine.

The fix was to reload the Nvidia Nforce drivers (version 15.00) from the
www.Nvidia.com website

I've had this not genuine issue before and resolved it. Basically, you
just need to go through phone activation again which is free. If you use
the direct phone number its free. In your 'Start Search' type slui 4
and hit Enter on your keyboard. Select Your Country. Hit Next. Dial the
phone number provided. Dial in your installation id.

When you speak to the next rep on the phone, tell him you need to
activate. If he asks, he may want to know if there has been any recent
software/hardware changes.

Which honestly is NONE of his or Microsofts business if there have been
hardware changes! As far as I am concerned they have absolutely no right to
know anything about my hardware.

That people accept this as "ok" is simply beyond my understanding.

Actually, Microsoft agrees with you and states that the only information
that a user need reveal is the installation ID.
That people accept this as "ok" is simply beyond my understanding.

And it reveals the little understanding these people have.

Quite correct, Alias!

http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/activation_facts.mspx

Mandatory Product Activation Data
The Installation ID is unique to each product and comprises two components:

Product ID. Unique to the product key used during installation

Hardware hash. Non-unique representation of the PC

The country in which the product is being installed (for Office XP and
Office XP family products only)

And if anyone actually believes that is all they want to know 2 activations
later, or that it is the only information they collect when Vista phones
home, then man...do I have some gorgeous beachfront property in arizona for
you!

Of course Stephan you are right. However, I can't really think of a
better way to fight MS on this than to use their own policy against them.

I remember a few posts in this very newsgroup where people had problems
getting their copies reactivated and where it quite obviously wasn't as
simple as giving the product id. And no, I am not going to dig them up.
http://groups.google.com if you are so inclined.

I'm also not naive enough to believe that MS will not collect data about the
systems their operating systems runs on, be it with or without the users
knowledge.

One reason I am not naive enough to believe MS wouldn't do that is the
simple fact I am a programmer myself. Plenty companies I have done work for
have asked me to place code into the apps to collect data without the users
knowledge. Matter of fact, it's the exception if I am *not* asked to do so.

So don't expect me to believe that out of all the companies in this world MS
would be the one company that does not have an interest in tracking such
data and that does not do it without the users knowledge.

Come to think of it, their auto update is capable of automatically upgrading
drivers isn't it? I recall a post on this NG about automatically updated
nVidia drivers via MS' Auto Update. So there you have it right there. Can't
upgrade drivers without having hardware information.

I may be missing something here. When I type slui 4 in my start search field
I only get back copies of e-mail responses to my origional post. No select
country or phone number. Am I missing something?

Thanks

slui 4 should appear at the top of the list under 'Programs' after entering
it in the start/search box. It will have a 'pair of keys' icon next to it.

I see nothing in the list that says "Programs." Only Windows Mail news
Message, Outlook E-Mail Message and Text Document. These are under "Type."

Still missing something I guess.

Thanks

It's not perfect, though. I have had hardware drivers offered to me on
