Thinkpad won't play audio except midi

Recently my T43 quit playing sounds in Windows Media Player, Realplayer, or
in IE at web sites such as CNN or NPR. I have checked all the obvious
settings (ie, everything the sound-problem troubleshooter mentions) and
everything seems to be OK. Ran a diagnostic program PCDoctor and my machine
is good. It WILL play midi files in Windows Media Player and in IE at web
pages with midi tunes.
I am using XP SP2 and am absolutely current on updates. I have heard of
people with this same problem after loading the fix for the recent WMF
problem--could there be something there that needs adjusting?
Please. Any ideas things to try? I have spent almost 3 hours on phone with
IBM support, who had me check the settings and reload the driver.

Have you tried a restore of your system? If this has been a recent problem.
Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore
You can go back up to 90 days, depending on the size you have
your settings.

Solution achieved. Altho I updated BIOS & embedded controller along with
sound card driver, what fixed the problem was just to remove the sound card
in DEVICE MANAGER and reboot. Win XP found the "new" hardware and installed
it for me, thus refreshing the boogered up driver and making all happy.
