Things that appear

I'm sure some of the things that go wrong are due to the fact that my
finger will sometimes twitch and depress the mouse button where it
shouldn't put something into play on the bad side, but even so, I'd
like to know how to fix the problems no matter thie origins. (I'm
much better on that since I found the Steadymouse program.)

Not sure what you call the panels that ariced when you push the logo
key between the left Ctrl & Alt, but things have disappeared over the
past several months. The first I noticed was that the DOCUMENTS sign
no longer took me to my documents folder, as it used to do.
The other things have been happening (or not happening) in the past
few weeks.
I don't recall everything that used to be on the right side panel, but
here's what's left:
DOCUMENTS
MUSIC
GAMES
COMPUTER
CONNECT TO
CONTROL PANEL
DEFAULT PROGRAMS
HELP and SUPPORT
RUN...
As I recall it, clicking on GAMES would bring up the list on the
right side of the panel, but now it brings up a new Window with the
links listed.

My questions: how do I get DOCUMENTS to work - what used to be there,
and how do I prevent any more losses?

My usual deeply meant thanks in advance.

Right-click on the taskbar, choose 'properties' and the Start Menu tab. When
you click the 'Customize' button, you can choose the items for the
right-side list and whether they show a list or open a folder, etc.

Right click the 'Start' button, choose properties. On the 'Start Menu'
tab, choose 'Customize...' button, click the 'Use Default Settings'
button.

Now, let's find the Documents folder -
Click Start, at the 'Start Search...' text box, key %USERPROFILE% -
this should open file Explorer at your user location. Open the
Document folder. You should now be at a location such as, 'youruserid -
Documents' highlight the address bar to reveal the actual folder
location, which will probably be something like, 'C:\Users\youruserid
\Documents'. Copy that location down, you will need it in a moment.

Now, go to Start and right click 'Documents', select 'Properties.' On
the Location tab, paste or key the path to Documents from above.

Good luck,

I got this far, except the location I got is C:\Users\owner\documents.
Now, go to Start and right click 'Documents', select 'Properties.' On
the Location tab, paste or key the path to Documents from above.

When I right-click 'documents,' and select 'Properties,' I get a
completely blank properties form, which does not have any tabs beyond
"GENERAL," and it will not accept any change or writing except in the
NAME place.

Thanks to you and the others who chimed in. I'm still working on the
'documents' issue, but there's one other thing still hanging. (It is
just a minor annoyance that I can live with, but still,,,,

This jogged my memory, and yes, I had made adjustments to the list of
what is on that part of the start menu, but the GAMES and the
DOCUMENTS problems are more recent than that.
It is GAMES than still nags, because it is now and has always been
marked as Display as link, not Display as menu, but it insists on
displaying the menu.
I have a vague recollection that I might have gotten rid of some games
there that I'd never use . . . I think HP included some of their games
as part of the deal when I bought this computer. Could killing games
make it not want to give links?

Again thanks, and I won't be too disappointed if I haveto see the
Games menu.

Try this...

Change it to LINK, OK, Apply
Restart your computer
Change it back to MENU, OK, Apply
Restart the computer again

Did it take this time?

This sounds like a good idea, but the problem here is that I bpught a
HP from Best Buy, neither of which felt like giving me a Vista disc,
but included that dreadful disc which will take you back to the
beginning (shudder!) so that's out of the question.

To all who've suggested fixes, thanks again. Games still wants to
give me the menu no matter how many times I press APPLY and re-boot.
(Eternal thanks to the one who mentioned the APPLY button. I tend to
miss seeing things like that sometimes. It helped me fix another
nuisance thing.)

So: DOCUMENTS still does nothing, and GAMES still likes to be seen
dressed as a menu.

These are not signs of the end of the world, so don't break a brain.
But I'll keep hoping that the answers will be coming my way.

Thanks again

Hmm... by 'owner' I assume that you mean your ID and not the word
'owner?'

Could this be because you are not in the Administrator's group - a
security thing? You will have to logon to an account that has
Adminstrator authority and add yourself to this group....
