They disappear into thin air

When I minimised any programme I'm using, it minimised to
the taskbar. Now, for some reason, nothing minimised is
displayed - it disappears somewhere and the only way I
can find of getting anything back is by double clicking
the application in Task Manager. Am I missing something
obvious?
Any suggestions gratefully received.
