the techs need a break

Who claimed that? People are saying you shouldn't trust dowloads from
an unknown source, and instead get them from well-know and established
sources.

Download.com is a well known source until recently it had spyware and
adaware on their site.

I would also call msn/windows instant messenger adaware and that from
Microsoft.

Even well known sites can have spyware.

I would be willing to test it on. Since I have a ghost image backup.

I have xp sp2

Pcbutts, what is your website address and I will see if I could use
any of the software.

PCBUTTHEAD doesn't understand English - I specifically said no one
should trust software from a unknown source and that his modification of
the files make it questionable.

Anyone that wants to offer free software from a vendor, and be
considered reputable, would provide a direct link to the vendors site -
not to mention it's a lot easier to give a link than keep downloading
what they think is the latest and moving it to their own servers.

Ah, but those sites are in the public eye, and are reported on by the
tech press.

And Download.com didn't add the add/spyware. It was the programs that
did that. If you were dumb enough to download Kazaa, then you really
deserved what you got with it.

pcButthead is just some lame schmuck.

Why not just accept that downloading and repackaging other vendors
software for your own glory is a waste of server space, provides
questionable software, makes no business sense, and is really lame
coming from the likes of you - why not save yourself some time and
provide quality links that people can use without having to second guess
if you screwed with the file they might download.

What an idiot. I never said that. Some other troll said something similar
about the path but nothing about the file. You really are a troll.

And do you suppose he said it without seeing it? I figured he mentioned
it because he saw it - and you've not claimed anything different in the
last three replies about it.

Me a troll - that's rich.

We would report you to your ISP/provider, and they would ask you to
remove the advert or your service would be terminated - do you really
want to play that game?

It's been done hundreds of time with lamers that post adverts to this
and other groups, you would be no different.

Thought I would also mention that Prodigy has rules about spamming
Usenet, you might want to check before your start something you will
regret.

I like how he put *x's* where the manager name should be and in the
email. My guess it is forged and he does not know the information to
provide.

From the PageDefrag ReadMe file:

"You may not distribute PageDefrag in any form, without express written
permission of Mark Russinovich."

Doesn't seem his supposed email would fit that bill.

Yeah, but it wasn't Bill who told anyone anything, it was "sum"one
else. :)

And no, its not exactly forged. I recognize the text based on what
Ch.Wi. mailed me when I asked them if he was licensed to redistribute
Sysinternal's applications.

However, if you take a look at the source, you'll see it was edited.

Consider the following:
<p class=MsoNormal align=center
style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:
auto;text-align:center'><span
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'>It
has come to our attention that the Web site <a
href="http://www.pcbutts1.com/"><u>http://www.pcbutts1.com/</u></a>
providing downloads from the page <a

href="http://www.pcbutts1.com/downloads/PageDefrag.zip"><u>http://www.pcbutts1.com/downloads/PageDefrag.zip</u></a>
may be distributing copyrighted Winternals and/or Sysinternals
product(s)
including &quot;PageDefrag.exe&quot;.&nbsp;</span></p>

That's one of the lines that wasn't edited. Now, consider the
following line, with the x's for the persons name:

<font size="2"><span style="font-family:
Arial">xxxxxxx</span></font></p>

The line that was not entirely changed below it:

<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Arial" size="2"> <span
style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial">xxxxxx
Manager</span></font></p>

Now, personally, I believe he really got the mail and x'ing out the
names was a polite thing to do by not publishing this persons name on
the Internet without their permission. I'm not about to do it either,
and only referred to them by the first two letters of each name. And I
only did that after making sure I couldn't find the person on the
Internet.

However, where the edits get interesting are further up in the
document. Consider the following two lines:

<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Arial" size="2">
<span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial">Unauthorized
distribution of Winternals or Sysinternals property violates United
States copyright laws. You should be aware that </span></font>

<font size="2"><span style="font-family: Arial">we have reviewed the
information you have submitted and your license and have found that
you
are not violating any </span></font><font face="Arial" size="2">

A couple different things are interesting. All the other paragraphs
don't get broken up with that font and span tag. The entire first
paragraph, with multiple lines, is a single span tag. This one isn't.
The only two sections where the font size tag is used is this one, and
the other line that was completely changed.

I'm sure the response will be something like 'Well, that section had
proprietary information that I didn't want to post on the web' or some
such excuse. To which, I would reply, 'Pull the other one, it's got
bells on.'

I'm sure that the source code will change sometime soon, after this is
read. Maybe it is time to ping the other vendor's products he is
hosting.

And, to reply to pcbutts1 directly: My spelling is just as good as my
reading, thank you very much.
