I like how he put *x's* where the manager name should be and in the email.
My guess it is forged and he does not know the information to provide.
Yeah, but it wasn't Bill who told anyone anything, it was "sum"one
else.
And no, its not exactly forged. I recognize the text based on what
Ch.Wi. mailed me when I asked them if he was licensed to redistribute
Sysinternal's applications.
However, if you take a look at the source, you'll see it was edited.
Consider the following:
<p class=MsoNormal align=center
style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:
auto;text-align:center'><span
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'>It
has come to our attention that the Web site <a
href="
http://www.pcbutts1.com/"><u>
http://www.pcbutts1.com/</u></a>
providing downloads from the page <a
href="
http://www.pcbutts1.com/downloads/PageDefrag.zip"><u>
http://www.pcbutts1.com/downloads/PageDefrag.zip</u></a>
may be distributing copyrighted Winternals and/or Sysinternals
product(s)
including "PageDefrag.exe". </span></p>
That's one of the lines that wasn't edited. Now, consider the
following line, with the x's for the persons name:
<font size="2"><span style="font-family:
Arial">xxxxxxx</span></font></p>
The line that was not entirely changed below it:
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Arial" size="2"> <span
style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial">xxxxxx
Manager</span></font></p>
Now, personally, I believe he really got the mail and x'ing out the
names was a polite thing to do by not publishing this persons name on
the Internet without their permission. I'm not about to do it either,
and only referred to them by the first two letters of each name. And I
only did that after making sure I couldn't find the person on the
Internet.
However, where the edits get interesting are further up in the
document. Consider the following two lines:
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Arial" size="2">
<span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial">Unauthorized
distribution of Winternals or Sysinternals property violates United
States copyright laws. You should be aware that </span></font>
<font size="2"><span style="font-family: Arial">we have reviewed the
information you have submitted and your license and have found that
you
are not violating any </span></font><font face="Arial" size="2">
A couple different things are interesting. All the other paragraphs
don't get broken up with that font and span tag. The entire first
paragraph, with multiple lines, is a single span tag. This one isn't.
The only two sections where the font size tag is used is this one, and
the other line that was completely changed.
I'm sure the response will be something like 'Well, that section had
proprietary information that I didn't want to post on the web' or some
such excuse. To which, I would reply, 'Pull the other one, it's got
bells on.'
I'm sure that the source code will change sometime soon, after this is
read. Maybe it is time to ping the other vendor's products he is
hosting.
And, to reply to pcbutts1 directly: My spelling is just as good as my
reading, thank you very much.
