We have a new problem with IE 6 that surfaced this week. Some computers on
Win 2000 and all Win XP computers I checked, all with IE 6, can not access
some web sites including EBay, Yahoo, and Microsoft, but are able to access
other sites without trouble. Another Win 2000 computer on the same network
with apparently identical security settings, software, and security updates
can access all sites. We use Norton Corporate Edition V 7.61. We have
current definitions and scans show no viruses. This problem seemed to start
with the recent Windows security updates, but I'm not absolutely sure.

Because the problem effects only some web sites and only some computers, I
am convinced it is a local machine issue. I've checked security settings in
IE and tried to reinstall IE 6 SP 1 without success. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Can the machine in question, ping these sites successfully?
Go into a command prompt, and type ping www.yahoo.com
this should give you some replies.

if theya re not able to ping these sites? Are they blocked in restricted
sites? Also when was the alst tiem an anti spyware scan was run on this
system? Is the host file clean of stray entries?

You can also try flushing the DNS. in the run box type ipconfig /flushdns

and you could also try to release and renew the ip address of the machine as
well.

Thanks for the suggestions. It turned out to be a DNS problem. Depending on
when they were set up, some computers were using the DNS from the ISP that
handles our email and web site and others were using the DNS from the ISP
that provides our physical internet access. Switching to the working DNS
solved the problem. It may have just been a coincidence that this happened
about the same time as the latest MS security updates.
