The need for Anti Virus software

Most techies are dismally aware that programs like Norton and McAffee have a
habit of dishing out unreasonably expensive programs. That those programs
have a habit of killing computers is also a familiar sight. Enter the free
programs. AVG Antivirus is free for the home user, provides unlimited updates
(which are provided daily), doesn't eat your computer, and does catch more
viruses than the aforementioned titles. I've been using it for years without
a single problem. Hope they won't boot me for listing it at

In my personal opinion you get what you pay for as far as protection goes...
if you get a free av your gonna get stuff still...
I am now and always will go with NOD32 by www.eset.com
They did a comparison on their site that you can view and you will realize
how good it really is...
Just my opinion.

Some of the very best anti-virus applications are free. Same goes for
web browsers and image viewers, manipulators.

I basically agree, AVAST and AVG are fine AVs. Sygate free
personal firewall was one of the best software firewalls ever
made... a shame Symantec bought them.

However, NOD32 is worth every penny and then some.

I do approve of all the additional security built into Vista, so my question
is 'How great is the need for Anti Virus software?' at the moment I am
getting a bad mark under 'Malware protection' in the Windows Security
Centre.

There was a early post that referred to anti virus software as a 'ball and
chain' - I would add that the additional insult is that you also have to pay
for it - though there are some free ones for home use. I have taken a
dislike (which could be overcome) to McAfee as their concept of a Lifetime
product has not lasted as long as a normal human life. My PC is connected to
the internet by my NAT router which attaches to an ADSL phone line.

So, what do others do?

It's an absolute must that you get a good anti-viral application and a
replacement for both the firewall and defragmentation utilities that
come witn any and all versions of Windows. It would take too much time
to explain all the many reasons why, but I doubt you'll find anyone,
including Bill Gates himself, that will disagree with me!

Yep

and a replacement for both the firewall and defragmentation utilities

I don't think so, no. Unlike av, there are better ways to address the
problems these things are designed to fix.

For example, I'd rather use a NAT router and native Windows firewall
than use a 3rd-party firewall and a USB "ADSL modem".

For example, I'd rather concentrate HD traffic within a small C:
containing OS, core apps, underfootware, swap and temp spaces, that
expect a 3rd-party defragger to direct the traffic in one doomed C:
It would take too much time to explain all the many reasons why

Try. Especially on your assertion that we "need" an add-on defragger.
