The joy(?) of accidently using the indexing

Just a real world case study...

So last night I decided to sort through a directory of misc MP3's. All
my music is nicely filed in appropriately names subfolders, except for
500 or so files in the misc folder. My task was to create the correct
subfolders for those 500 songs.

I decided it would be easier to have the explorer list the songs
grouped by artist. Sort of might make it easier. I scroll to the
bottom and click on a file name, copy the artist. Click on an empty
space, create a new folder. Rename the new folder. Hmm, that's funny.
New folder should now have the name of the artist, but it does not.
WTF? Looks like I was working in a search folder. 5 seconds later the
folders name is displayed properly. Drag the song into the folder. Try
again. Same deal waiting for the name to get updated. Proceed with
much frustration as my focus gets bounced to the top of the list all
the time. Swear when my focus gets bounced back to the top of the list
as I am scrolling down to the bottom again. Finally after about 8
folders I give up. Go back to my music directory (and out of the
search folders). I have 16 directories now.. the 8 I created, and 8
New Folder (x) directories. WTF? Very glad that I checked the
contents, because half the music files were in the names folders and
the other half were in the New Folder folders.

Only 492 more directories to create and songs to move. With XP, this
might have taken me a good (but monotonous hour) of cycling through
the workflow. I am thinking with Vista it will take me much longer.

It's commonly referred to as progress.

Each release of windows tasks take progressively longer. =)

indexing is the sin of vista

Try Tag & Rename. Works great.

MP3 Tag&Rename? I absolutely love that software - it really really
saved my sanity when I aquired an iPod and realzied my MP3's were 98%
not tagged. I never eralized you could rename directories with it
though. Something to try when I get home.

Doesn't it get old, post after post, telling people how stupid vista is? We
all get it now. Vista terminal ator (the retard) doesn't like Vista. Now
go play with Ubuntu or Windows 2008 Server Beta, just like Kevin Putzke and
get the hell out.

Hey, Google indexes stuff, and their stock is over $500, so Bill is trying
to find something he can index too.
