Some MP3's not indexed

Mark Veldhuis

Hi,

On a seperate partition, I made a folder which contains many MP3's.
I put this folder in the options for Vista's indexing, but it seems they
are not being indexed at all.
When I put a title of a song in the Start Menu's search bar, it does not
find the corresponding MP3 file. Same with artist name.
The same folder also contains a subdirectory with pictures (.jpg). They
are indexed, and can be found with Vista's search function.
MP3's in the regular folder (Username->Music) are indexed and can be
found.
What do I have to do to get these MP3's indexed too? The index window in
Control Panel says indexing has been completed.

Happy New Year! :)

Right-click on that partition>properties and make sure
"Index this drive for faster searching" is checked.

Hi,

"Index this drive for faster searching" is checked.

Thanks for you reply, Michael.
It is checked, so that is not the problem. Besides, pictures in the same
folder (but in another subdirectory) are indexed properly.
Something keeps this MP3's from being indexed. I went into the indexing
options and made sure all the subdirectories are checked for indexing.

Did you check under the Advanced options>File Types in
Indexing Options to be sure mp3 is checked?

Also, there is an option there to "Rebuild" Re-Index
selected locations.

Do any of those mp3's show up in the search results if you just
put mp3 in the search box?

A couple thoughts here.

Just guessing here but perhaps your ID3 tags in the MP3s are defective. I
know that Media Player, like just about any other program, can have issues
with defective ID3 tags. Will your files play properly in WMP?

Also, there are issues with using WMP to play files not added to your
library. They'll play but there is reduced functionality based on changes
in the way WMP 11 handles its library. I wonder if there's something that
Vista does in indexing media files that ties into the WMP 11 library. Try
adding the files to your media library and see if they are now indexed. I
would love to hear back on that if that works. That would really suck!

Hi,

Yes, everythink looks fine there. And the MP3's I have in the regular
music foler (username -> music) are indexed without any problem.
Also, there is an option there to "Rebuild" Re-Index
selected locations.

Tried that. It didn't help.
Do any of those mp3's show up in the search results if you just
put mp3 in the search box?

Yes, some do. And it looks like the few that show up are the ones I
played in Winamp or WMP11. So MP3's that are in that particular folder
and which were not yet played don't appear....

I think Dale offered a good suggestion. Try adding
the folder to be monitored in WMP, maybe that'll
do something. Worth a try. I hope you get it worked
out.

Happy New Year to you!

Take care,

Yes, no problem playing them in WMP11.
I will look into the tags of the files that aren't indexed.

I put one subdirectory in the WMP library last night. So far, I am not
able to find them when I try with the search bar in the start menu....

Kind regards,

Send me one of the MP3 files to dalesngaddy234abc (removing the numbers and
the letters after the numbers) then the at symbol and then hotmail followed
by dot and finally com.

I'll look at it in my raw tag editor and see if I can tell what's going on.
