I notice the following:

"It is recommended to use an NT-based version of Windows (NT4, 2000 or
XP). Starting with GIMP 2.2 and GTK+ 2.4, older versions such as Windows
95 are not supported anymore."

Thanks Roger.

I like GIMP ... but as I am not very good at actually drawing stuff, I
need a graphics program that lets me do all this and gives me tools to
draw shapes. A mix between a vector graphics and an image program.
I usually end up with two programs (a vector and GIMP) and I then have
to cut and paste (when I have the shape resembling something reasonable)
using an intermediary ... such as MS paint.

Awful

There must be something better that is all-singing and dancing !!!

I just did a background, cut-and-paste a figure, drew a vase then combined them
ALL with GIMP. I'm not sure I understand what you're saying you need MS Paint,
etc., to do that you can't do with GIMP. Explanation, please. TIA.

Drawing shapes ie rectangles, polys, circles, filled, unfilled etc.
There is a render filter in Gimp ... but it is not very accurate.

Then you should be using a _drawing program_ the OpenOffice (Draw
module) or the program Inkscape, both are well suited for this task.

sigh .... that was my point ... I needed both, and so said 'wouldn't it
be nice if ...'

I have seen some lovely images in Gimp done using selection tools and
freehand, however I am not that good. I often need to do straight
lines. And I could do it pixel by pixel, but that is soooo painful.

Ah, I had almost forgotten about this one; "Zoner Draw 3"
<http://www.zoner.com/download/>

You need to scroll way down the page to download vers. 3 (the full
freeware version). Has a comprehensive manual for DL'ing too.

Combines vector and bitmap in the one app. Just what you want :)
