The Future of Access?

KDG

Please enlighten me. I am normally not a person to put much stock in rumors,
but this one has me a little concerned. Is there anyone out there who has
heard that within the not too distant future MS plans to dump Access from
newer Office packages? I understand that the reasoning behind this is the
arguement that Excel will be able to do everything Access does. Yes, you can
do many things in Excel that Access can, but not everything and not as pretty
or as functional without a lot more work. I hope that this is not true! I
have so much work wrapped up in Access that it would be nearly a disaster to
have it go away! Also, could you fill me in on the latest developments in the
Vista world? Is it going to get better or get scraped?

I first heard this rumor back in Access 97 or about 10 years ago. Both Access
and Excel were going to merge into one product called Excess. ;-)

Even if MS was foolish enough to drop a popular application which probably
is still a money maker, you could upsize to SQL Server.

I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

Nope, not heard any rumor of any type from anywhere on the internet. And, we
know that the ms-access team at Microsoft is working hard away at adding new
features tot he next great version.
I understand that the reasoning behind this is the
arguement that Excel will be able to do everything Access does.

I never Read or heard or seen an article posted by anybody on any were on
the web. you're going to have to provide an article, critical magazine
article, and something that is just more than bar talk by some guy at the
end of the bar who had too many beers...

could you please provide a link or credible article by anybody that states
access is on its way out? an access 2007 was probably one of the largest
rewrites and largest releases of a product in its what eighteen year
history?
Also, could you fill me in on the latest developments in the
Vista world?

I'm not sure what you mean by latest developments, but Vista is their most
successful operating system launch in terms of sales numbers. They are
reporting 20 million + sales for February. (this quarter is the 1st one of
wide spread release ).

furthermore , Microsoft sales are WHOPPING 79% from last year's SAME
quarter. MANY analysts are stating this is due to the delay in releasing of
vista (they missed the Christmas shopping season, and furthermore many
people held off purchasing computers since they knew vista was coming . So,
now we seeing the huge sales increase in this quarter....up 79% over last
year). Furthermore, vista is now finally in wide release.
Is it going to get better or get scraped?

What you mean get better? You going to have to tell me what it is exactly
about Vista (which is breaking windows xp sales records) needs to be better?

Without question I remember a tremendous amount of my clients hung on to
windows 98 SE as long as they could, but eventually did move over to windows
XP.

So, while most users where VERY hesitant to upgrade to windows xp,
eventually the cries and complaints faded away and everybody pretty much
adopted Windows XP. Now, just like windows 98, the consumers have grown to
love and become attached to windows XP.

......just like they grew to love windows 98.

You have to point out to me what needs to get better? as a general rule, I
tended to wait for a few sp releases. If you look at this historically MS
tends to really NAIL the os by about the 2nd sp pack. ....and then people
start to really like the next version of the operating system.

I have little doubt that by the time the 2nd sp arrives for vista, the same
change of heart in consumers will occur again. When I look at how MUCH
better things are out in vista, it starts to become rather hard to go back
to XP. A VERY large number of the flaws and bad design decisions made in XP
are fixed in Vista...and I think that were MOST of the improvements have
occurred.

For example, are you connected to a LAN, are you connected ALSO to the
internet, is file sharing on your computer turned on? is printer sharing
turned on? In windows xp, to answer all of THESE BASIC AND OFTEN needed
pieces of information , you can get ALL IN ONE screen. Take a look:

http://www.kallal.ca/vista/index.htm

Try getting that above information at a glance in windows xp....it is an
absolute joke. furthermore , no only does that screen DISPLAY all this
information , but the options are actually usable options on that screen
that you can click on. So, that screen serves as a launch point to change
the settings. to find that information is a absolute MESS in windows xp.
vista is ZILLION times more friendly, an better laid out for users to FIND
STATUS INFORMATION that you need. And,note the how RELEVANT the links on the
left side of the screen are in terms of windows firewall etc. the screens
like this are the results of the many many man hours of research and really
great design.

If you looking for a brilliant paper on improved designs and layout of
things....vista is that product....

Anyway, you just have to explain to me what it is in Vista that you think
needs to get better...else we just blowing hot air about something that we
not given any real Intellectual thought about, but are once again listening
to that guy at the end of the bar who has had way too many beers ....

Thanks! I sure hope that they would at least give some MAJOR warning if they
did do something stupid like that. But I tell you, I'm not so confident in
their practices lately.

What absolute rubbish. The rumours that Excel is going to merge into
Access. The structure is so vastly different it would be
impossible. To someone looking at a table in datasheet view they
might be deluded into thinking that is similar to Excel's spreadsheet.
But consider relationships between tables and field types?

Not a chance.
