Future of Access

Hello all

I'm sorry if this is not the appropriate place to ask this question, but it
was the closest I could find.

A customer has asked me about future-proofing a database that is currently
implemented in Access 2003. He says he has been told that Microsoft will not
be supporting Access beyond the 2003 version and that future versions of
Office will be shipped with some form of MySQL instead of Access. Does
anyone have any idea if there is any truth in this? It seems a bit unlikely
to me.

TIA

That's absolutely incorrect. Access 12 betas are being run at the moment and
the Access team at Microsoft is working on Access 13. I cannot violate NDAs
by giving any specifics, suffice to say I have seen and used Access 12,
MySQL is not in its future, JET is alive and well and being enhanced.

Thanks for the very quick replies. Like I said, it did seem unlikely, but
the customer wanted the question answered and you do what the customer wants!

I'll pass on the message about the source of flying pigs...

None whatsoever. The argument has been going on since Access 1.1 in
1992. Access is always "going to die with this release". It's still
the bestselling desktop database software in the world.

Access 12 is under very active development; search for it on MS's
website if you want details.

Thanks for the info. As I said in my reply to the other guys, if a customer
wants you to research something you do it, however unlikely you think it may
be.
