That's not a Mouse - The mouse debate!

How come they call those (so called) cordless mice a mouse? It's not
a mouse. A mouse has a tail, which is why they got that name in the
first place, due to their cord. Cordless mice dont have cords, thus
they dont have tails, which means they are not a mouse.

So what are they?

HID's. Bobtail mice?

Even my Logitech Marble Trackball is a mouse.

If it hooks up to the computer and allows free motion anywhere in a 2 dimensional X/Y
plain it is a mouse.

A good example of senseless "convenience".
It won't work with my partition/boot software.
I assume that's because wireless drivers are
needed for wireless input to be recognized.
(Maybe some newer motherboards have that?
My current MB is not very old.)
If I had a wireless mouse and keyboard I would
have no added convenience at all, at the price
that I wouldn't be able to do anything without
Windows running.

Snails.

<chuckling> A Manx doesn't have a tail, but it's still a cat.

They are mice, because regardless of how they originally got their
name, the word "mouse" now refers to a device with their particular
function.

It's the nature of language--words change their meaning over time.

I don't understand that? I have lots of wireless keyboards and mice. And
unless you are running Windows 98SE or earlier, you really shouldn't
need any drivers for either wireless keyboards or mice. Some does have
drivers to operate special features, but you don't need them if you
don't want too.

That sounds strange to me as well. As wireless mice have more freedom
since there isn't a cord to get into the way. Plus it is easier to clean
both without any cords. Plus I like to use my keyboard on my lap like a
laptop (and this one has a touchpad too). And if it had a cord, it would
get in the way a lot.

Also in the winter the humidity is low and static electricity is all
over the place. And I have touched wired keyboards and mice before and
have zapped some of them out of commission. But that doesn't happen with
wireless keyboards or mice.

I'm talking about software that boots into its own
DOS-style system. It has mouse drivers, but it
doesn't recognize wireless. If you have wireless mouse
*and* keyboard you may not be able to run anything
that doesn't run in Windows.

Oh I see. I wouldn't be happy with a DOS OS. Actually I haven't since
'93 with my first Windows 3.1 machine. As I rather use Linux and
wireless works there too.

Let's look at it's namesake - the real mouse. If the farmer's wife
chops off his tail with a carving knife, he looks funny, but he doesn't
stop being a mouse.
