Text turning into symbols

I use several templates that I or someone in our office created. Sometimes
when a document is created from one of these templates part or all of the
text is changed to symbols. One scenario is, just as Print is selected the
entire text is changed to symbols and is printed that way. In the next
scenario, only a portion of the text is changed to symbols upon opening the
new document and it prints fine. In the first case the font is Times New
Roman, font size 11. The fix is to change the font size larger or smaller.
In the second case, the font varies throughout the document and it appears
that only the font sizes 7 and 9 are affected. Again, changing the font size
larger or smaller seems to be a temporary fix. Any ideas why this only
occurs with certain font sizes and is sporatic? I've tried recreating the
template thinking it might be corrupt, but unless I change the font size,
eventually the problem reoccurs. Have also tried reinstalling fonts. Any
ideas why this is happening?

One possible scenario would be that you're printing to a printer that has
resident fonts in 10 and 12 points but can't handle scalable fonts (doesn't
print graphics). What printer driver is selected?

I print to an HP LaserJet 4100 PCL6. I've also had this happen when I select
Print to a PDF file.

Thank you

That's the same printer I use, and I've never experienced this problem. What
font are you using? Also, I could have sworn that somewhere in the printer
Properties there was a list of settings that included the choice whether to
use resident fonts or download soft fonts, but I cannot currently find that.
(I do find a Device Settings tab in the LJ 4 Properties that is what I'm
remembering; I was so sure the LJ 4100 included that as well!).

Font is Times New Roman and changed the font size from 11 to 11.5 as a work
around, at least so far. At my last place of employment this occured with a
different font but the same font size 11 (don't remember which font but I
know it wasn't TNR) and I printed to a desktop HP printer but don't remember
the model.

You might see if there is an updated driver for the printer, as it does seem
likely to be a driver problem, but beyond that I have no further
suggestions.

Thank you Suzanne. I'll give it a try.
