Terminal Services & Active Directory Error

Dominic Marsat

Hi,

Tried posting the following in the terminal service newsgroup
and have been redirected here:

Server: Windows 2000 SBS

Terminal Client: Windows XP Pro

Logging onto the server as administrator through the terminal
services client and then trying to access the active directory
throws the following error:

'Naming information cannot be located because:
The logon attempt failed'

I've have a good look on the internet (google groups) and
found similar but unanswered posts.

This also affects the exchange console.

I received the following reply, all of which I've tried
without success. Thanks in advance for your help.

Anything in the EventLog?

Nothing unusual. There's a 'Pre-authentication failed' message
in the security log (name: administrator, service: krbtgt, type:
0x2, code: 0x18, address: 127.0.0.1) at the time when I tried
to access the active directory.
There are many reasons for this error (DNS problem, renamed
administrator account, etc). Check if this helps:

I don't think it's a DNS problem - this would surely create
all sorts of other problems on the network. Everything else
is behaving normally + the administrator account hasn't been
renamed.

Interestingly, if I raise my permissions (dominic) to admin
and login using 'dominic', I can see the small business server
personal console and make changes to users that way but it
doesn't solve the problem. I need to be able to access the
AD as administrator.

Are the particular Terminal Server successfully joined to Active Directory
Domain and do you logging in as a Domain User? Make sure DNS are configured
right and you can resolve the internal FQDN name of the Active Directory
Domain.

Both services are on the same machine, which is the PDC.
and do you logging in as a Domain User?

Yes, the administrator of the domain.
Make sure DNS are configured

Domain.

All other services run ok. I can ping all machines by IP
address or computer name so this surely isn't a DNS
problem, is it?
