Reinstallin OS

I have two servers running Windows 2003. One runs Active Directory, DNS,
DHCP and a couple other things. The other runs terminal services. I need to
install a array controller in the first server running Active Directory which
requires I reinstall the OS. Can I temporarily switch active directory, DNS
ets. to the terminal server. Will this maintain the SIMS such that the
client machines have no problem logging onto the network when I eventually
switch back active directory to the first server. What’s the best way to go
about this?

You can't promote the TS server to a DC because once you do this, the
ability for users to use the TS would only work for users who can logon to a
DC. Which by default is Admins, Backup Operators and Server Operators (I'm
going on memory on this so I may not be 100% on who can logon). So your
average user would lose access to this TS server.

You can promote a member server but doing a TS would be a big mistake.

If you can find another server to do this then you could do the promotion
via the following:

Backup, backup, backup (Make sure you have a good back up of the system
state on your dc!!!!!)

Before the promotion of the DC make sure to install dns, wins and dhcp.
Plus expect to lose TS Licensing during the process.

If DNS isn't AD integrated you should do this for ease of transfer.

Promote the member server to a dc
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/238369/EN-US/

Move the fsmo roles to the new DC
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;255690&Product=win2000

Move DHCP from one server to another
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325473/en-us

Move the WINS database (You could just point all clients to the new WINS
server)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875419/en-us

Terminal Services Licensing (Authorize a new server)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/273566/en-us

Point your clients to the new dc, dns, wins and fix any relay agents for
dhcp

Do the upgrade and do the reverse, although it would be of value to keep to
dc's online so in the event of a disaster you won't lose your AD until you
do a restore.

Before demoting the dc shut it off for a day or so to make sure that you
haven't overlooked anything. Once everything is running fine then demote.
