TECH: IE will not connect

Hey everyone, my friend ran a spyware removal program on his computer and
now internet explorer will not work, i have dumped every temp file, reset
all options, and all updates were run prior to spyware removal. The weird
thing is everything else works great minus one thing, some how Norton
antivirus' automatic liveupdate can not be enabled anymore. But what makes
this really weird... everyother internet based application works: Remote
Destop, his LAN, mozillia, etc.

Any ideas?

It may be a HOSTS file problem.
Look also for a file named HOSTS (no extension, could be hidden) rename it
OLDHOSTS.

Find out what else can be causing this. Get help from this forum.

Go to http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads.php#det
Download "Hijack This!" [freeware] or download direct (below):

If you get a 404 error or Access denied, try:
http://216.180.252.218/~spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/hijackthis.zip

Unzip, double-click "HijackThis.exe" and Press "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Click: "Save Log" (generates "hijackthis.log")

Next, HijackThis | Config [button] | Misc Tools [button]
Click: Generate StartupList log [button] (generates "startuplist.txt")

Next, go to the below location:
