Every time I try to open IE, I get the following
message: "internet explorer has encountered a problem and
needs to close". I have tried everything I can think of.
I know the internet works because I am able to update
Norton and ping the internet. I have ran Norton and
removed viruses from this pc. I have ran AdAware and
Spybot and removed all that was found. I ran sfc /scannow
and that did not work. I reinstalled IE from the control
panel add/remove programs. There has to be a solution
without wiping the drive and starting over.
Try the following and see if it helps.
IMPORTANT:
Before trying to remove spyware, download a copy of LSPFIX from
the URL below - some malware may kill your internet connection when it is
removed, this program will enable you to regain your connection.

(NOTE: If you can not download these programs from the Internet, if your PC
has CD read capabilities, go to another computer with CD-ROM burning
capabilities. Create a folder on the hard drive of the other computer called
HOLD, download the files to that folder, then burn that folder to a CD.
Copy the HOLD folder to your HD and then install the program from there
and run it.
You may need this also.
Restore default Search functions:
In order to restore you default Search functions, download and run the
program below. You will have to redo any customized features you may have
added afterward.

This will restore the Windows defaults for a whole lot of Search related
registry entries.
CAUTION: BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY FIRST!
Close IE, copy the bold to Notepad, save as Search.reg (save as 'all files',
and doubleclick. Answer 'yes' when prompted to add the contents of
Search.reg to the Registry:
