The settings are set to get these addresses from the ISP. The numbers shown
are those if the static addresses are checked. The numbers would not paste,
so I wrote them in.
Yes, I can get into Yahoo.com for mail and the internet. This is how I am
communicating with you. Also, as I said at first, I can get into MS Mail
(OE) thru IE even though I can not get the web portion of IE to come up.
There are no odd entries in the \\\hosts file---only a local host setting.
Yes to question #4

couple questions:
1) your using a linksys wireless router of some sort? do you know how to
enter your webpage manager for it
http://192.168.1.1 and login? the
default user name is admin and password is blank or the username is blank
and the password is password or admin or administrator something like that.
When you enter this webpage, you will see an "ipconfig" for it where it will
show your external ip address , gateway and dns servers , paste those here
as well.
2) when you browser to
http://www.yahoo.com and go to mail it works fine?
3) are there any odd entries in c;\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file
when you open it in notepad?
4) im assuming in control panel > network connections > lan connection >
properties > tcp ip > properties that you have "obtain ip address
automatically on"?

dsears,
im sorry but i think i responded to the wrong person in this thread, so
ignore my suggestion. but i will try to help you anyway.
go to dos by typing cmd in start > run when your at the dos prompt type
ipconfig /all
in the top left corner of the Dos window there is an icon where u can chose
edit > select all and then edit > copy and then paste that into this thread.
I would also check in internet explorer tools > internet options >
connections > lan settings button and make sure no proxy is checked.

Scratch my last post--I went too far down the HKCU reg. In the desktop,
under IE, there is a key "DownloadDirectory" = G:\ ---the virtual disk
assigned for the receipt and storage of all downloads. In the Laptop, there
is no key "DownloadDirectory" under IE.
:
did they both have the key DownloadDirectoy = c:\documents and
settings\profile\desktop
?
:
I checked (compared) the reg key on the "bad" laptop to the "good" desk top.
The laptop has 3 entries [(default), Reg_SZ, value not set];
[CheckexeSignatures, Reg_SZ, yes]; [RunInvalidSignatures, Reg_DWORD,
0x00000000(0)]---The desk top has only the one [(default), Reg_SZ, value not
set] Both running XP HE sp2. I must admit that I do not know what to do
with the information.
:
just a check, check your registry key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\ Download Directory key

I can not get IE 6 to come up. Instead I get the "can not find server" page.
When that does come up, I can still get into OE mail. I have access to DSL
Yahoo and can get into all internet sites as well as yahoo mail. I suspect
that an IE 6 file became corrupted when I loaded QuickBooks even though I
opted out of installing IE5. I have tried the following: Removed Q.B.s, ran
sfc /scannow, scanned for viruses with Norton Inter. Sec, down loaded and ran
MS 1.0 spyware, downloaded and upgraded all XP HE and IE 6 to latest, talked
to Toshiba support who agrees that I have a problem with IE 6 and after a
series of tests, suggested that I find a way to repair XP HE. My Toshiba
recovery disk, aside from providing a lot of drivers, only gives me the
option of formating the entire hard drive and completely reinstalling all
supplied software. MS has a procedure for repairing IE but that requres the
original installation disk that Toshiba did not supply. I have a desk top
that is running XP HE and IE 6 works well. Is it possible to use that as a
repair source? and if so, how do I make it work? I have a wireless
connection between the lap top and desk top. I would prefer to use IE6 rather
than set Yahoo as the default.
