ie just not opening

hi. here's the deal: while the ie window does not open, iexplore does show
up in tasks. no
suspicious tasks running. BUT, if i open windows explorer and type in an
addy, it switches over to ie and then runs fine.

this is a w2k sp4 box. all updates and patches applied. ran adaware plus
from both normal and safe modes and spybot normal. cleaned all i found
(nothing more severe than hotbar). hijack this found some entries i didn't
like (aoalla.exe.reg_run) so i deleted. sophos a/v is clean. ran scandisk
and sfc. and i just ran a repair per

still dead. anyone?
