TCP/IP Problems

All,

I've lost my internet connection...

Running Win2K Pro. I use SBC DSL for my internet
connection. The actual connection is working fine...I am
writing to you from my laptop through the same
connection. My home is networked wirelessly, so
everything from the connection through the wireless
gateway is working just fine.

But on my PC I can no longer grab DHCP connection.
Problem started after I fat-fingered a wizard on a SBC DSL
utility that I had to install on my machine months ago.
It automatically "Repaired" my internet connection
(probably setting back to the defaults that it used a long
time ago), and I've been unable to connect since.

I've googled and checked the MS kb, and taken several
preventative actions to no avail.

Symptoms: when set to DHCP, the IP address of 0.0.0.0
shows up. I try ipconfig /renew, but I get a strange
error:

The following error occurred when renewing adapter X: An
internal error occurred. Disconnect and reconnect the
network interface or reboot the machine.

The network interface is a USB wireless gateway, so I
unplugged and uninstalled and rebooted to no avail.

Another symptom: when I set my TCP/IP setting to a static
IP address and ping www.yahoo.com, I get a funny error msg
stating that something has happened that is not a socket.

Another symptom: Norton AV email protection will not
start up.

Some searches have led me to believe that something (virus
or freeware program) has corrupted my TCP /IP stack. So I
deleted the WinSock and WinSock2 registry keys and
uninstalled and re-installed TCP/IP on my machine. The
uninstall / re-install of TCP/IP never worked smoothly.
There was always an error thrown. Then, if I looked at
the properties of the adapter, it would either not be
reflected, or there would be no components that were shown
installed with the network adapter. Close the dialog and
re-open, and voila, the TCP/IP protocol was there (or not)
as expected. But this did not do the trick. Seemingly
only effect of this action was to force me to re-
boot "every" time I change TCP / IP settings (used to be
able to change without). So I restored the registry
settings that I had deleted.

Next step was to re-install Win2K Pro using upgrade
option. That hasn't worked either.

So my last resort is to format and reinstall Win2K from
scratch, but I thought I'd see if anyone had any ideas out
there...

I would have removed the NIC and uninstalled all of the networking apps
and protocols, and rebooted the computer. After shutting down, re-install
the NIC and networking. This usually cycles out any issues that crept into
the Registry. And, finally, re-build the networking services, protocols, etc.,
according to the ISP's recommendations. If this fails, then consider doing
a clean re-install.
