tccp/ip problem with WinXP

WinXP worked fine at college and for a while at home, then
suddenly no internet access ("Page Not Found", no email,
etc). D-Link support ruled out NIC & driver (ping OK to
everyone with names and numbers, but can't ping own IP
address). Tried Micosoft KB articles to reset tcp/ip and
winsock, without correction. No firewall. System Restore
and freeware fixers didn't work either. SystemWorks
current.

Was going to try to reinstall WinXP, but CD is misplaced.

Next ?

Possibly - try:

1. Go to WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\etc\ rename your hosts file.

2. In Internet Explorer, click Tools/Internet Options. Connections tab/LAN
settings button. Make sure you are not configured to use a proxy server.

No luck on renaming hosts file. Proxy is not enabled. No
firewall either -- I double-checked!

Would it worth while to borrow a WinXP CD from someone and
try to use it to repair mine? My CD was misplaced in the
move back home.

Thanks.

I heard the Win Update recently installed a new patch to
my PC about the time that the internet access
disappeared. Would System Restore remove the patch if I
rolled back to a time when my computer was working ?

If so, I rolled back, and it did not fix the problem.
