Taskbar freeze after critical updates

B

Barry

After installling a new copy of XP professional and
updating all the files at Windows Update, I get a
consistent problem wherein the taskbar and the system
tray icons are not responsive to the mouse. Clicking
makes no difference.

Opening a window is possible from the desktop but once
open, a mouse click in any area of the window greys it
out and it becomes non-functional. The start menu cannot
be accessed with the mouse, only with the windows key.

If I bring up the task manager and "end process" the
taskmgr.exe program, the system returns to normal and I
can use the mouse on the taskbar once more.

This issue has happened on several of my computers at
work so it is not because of a particular configuration
of computer.

There must be some software conflict but I am at a loss
to know what it is. I have not even loaded any other
third party software on the computer so there is no
conflict there.

Any suggestions would be most welcome. I searched the
database without success.

Thanks.

Hi Barry,

I would first start with replacing the mouse to test.....

Other than that, see if this helps:

Run both edits on line 157 and this one:

Restore Taskbar and Desktop to Default Functionality (Line 164)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the VBS Files: Download .vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you
may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double click the vbs
file. You will be prompted when the script is done.
