taskbar appearance when wrong

greetings to all who can help, i was running my window xp in a good condition, but later in few weeks, i realize that there are something wrong in my taskbar. let me simplify what is the problem

A normal taskbar must contain a "start" logo on the left side, and got some small icons on the right side. So, if i did add some toolbar in my taskbar, there won't be annthing on the middle side of the taskbar,right? It is normal that the middle of my taskbar got those toolbar or don't have the toolbar. The problem that i face with is when i click on any icon on my desktop, there should be a rectangular window in the middle of my taskbar,right? or i give another example, even when i click on an internet explorer or even when i click on kazaa, my taskbar should show that i got click on those icon or programs and will be listed in the middle of my taskbar,right? So, my problem is there are nothing appears in my taskbar when i click on those programs or icon. i have check or the properties and anything that is possible. It's weird that those window didn't listed on my taskbar... can anyone tell my what had happen
or my pc is infected by virus?

If you right-click the taskbar, what does "Lock the Taskbar" say? Is it
checked, or not? If it's checked, uncheck it (you can put it back later).

Do you see a staggered set of dots right up against the area where the small
icons and clock appear (the "system tray")? If so, try dragging the set of
dots left. It may be that your section of the bar for showing open programs
somehow got crunched right up against the system tray, so the taskbar
entries just don't have anywhere to show.

Jason, what i would like to say is thank you for your suggestion, but it seems that i'm still had my error. There isn't any dots against the system tray. anyone can help me on my problem?
