How do I remove documents from taskbar in Windows XP?

I'm not talking about the systray where the clock is or the
quicklaunch area near the Start button, but on the taskbar itself.
The problem is when I right click and delete the document, the
document itself gets deleted (in other words, the shortcut really
isn't a shortcut but the document itself that's showing up in the
taskbar -- and no, the document isn't open). Thanks.

What happens if you grab it from the taskbar and drag it to the desktop and then
delete it from there

Took me several tries but it worked finally. The cursor has to be in
the leftmost part of the icon space for it to work else all you did
was create another shortcut on the desktop. That was frustrating, but
at least now that I discovered that thing through numerous trial and
errors, it's gone. What a relief! Thanks.
