Taskbar and opening in a new window.

At work, I have my favorites in the taskbar along the bottom of the screen.
When I click on a link in that folder, it opens a new window. Each time I
click on the link, it opens a new window with that webpage in it, regardless
of how many windows I have open.

At home, I click on the link, it opens a new window the first time. Each
time after that, it opens the link in the currently active window. This is
very frustrating.

Both computers have XP, and I'm using IE 6.0 on both. Work is Pro and home
is Home editions of XP, but my coworker is having the same problem on her
computer which has XP Pro on it at home.

Suggestions or Ideas.

In IE go to Tools...Internet Options...Advanced tab, Browsing section,
uncheck "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts", click Apply, click Okay.

I got the same problem he did, but your solution didn't solve it for I'm
afraid.

Whenever I click on Internet shortcut (either from my Links bar or Favorites
menu) or enter a URL manually in the address field - IE opens a new window
instead of using the same windows.

Also, popups won't display properly. When I click on a link that is supposed
to open a smaller popup window, the windows is created, but the content opens
in a second regular sized window.

I tried to make the change you suggested, but it only freezes IE and when it
finally unfreezes it still opens a new window.

Would really like to solve this as it's driving me mad.

As for your first problem, to keep them from opening in new windows, I
assume you checked (rather than unchecked) the box I suggested in my
previous post. It seems you want the opposite effect.

If no joy....

It would appear you have an issue with opening new windows

First, update/reinstall your scripting engines from here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp

If still no joy, go to File Types (My Computer...Tools...Folder
Options...File Types tab)
Scroll down to the URL: Hypertext Transfer Protocol file type, click to
highlight, click Edit, click Open, click Edit (slightly different with ME -
click to highlight, click Advanced, click Open, click Edit).

Application used: "C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\iexplore.exe" -nohome
Use DDE box should be checked
DDE Message: "%1",,-1,0,,,,
Application: IExplore
DDE...not running: <blank>
Topic: WWW_OpenURL

Okay out.

Hi Jon!

Thanks for your reply.

When I check under File Types i only find URL: Internet Shortcut, not
Hypertext Transfer Protocol and the one precent uses "Shell Doc Object and
Control Library" for opening.
Should I edit that one or create a new one? (just want to be sure)

I also tried to do the other ways you described, like reinstalling scripts
and reregistering dlls but it didn't help.

Many thanks in advance,
Jeaz

I am sure Jon will be back later but...

You are looking at the wrong thing in File Types.
Do NOT edit that one.
Do NOT create a new one.

Please try again.
(This may change slightly according to your operating system, which
you don't seem to mention)

You are looking at Extensions=URL and File Types=Internet Shortcut
Look at Extensions= (NONE) and File Types=URL: Hypertext Transfer
Protocol

Ah, ok.

I checked my settings and found the "file type" and everything is entered as
described.

Unfortunatly for me that means I'm out of ideas...

Anyone got any fresh ones?

With respect, I am afraid you have made it very difficult by hijacking
a post which seems to be quite different, even though you say "I got
the same problem he did" and many may skip your post.

Have you tried Jon's other suggestions?
If so, try a new post detailing your problems and what you have done.
It may make it clearer for Jon (and for me)

I've made my own thread, but never got any answers to that one...

I'll make a new one again.

Your own thread?
I don't see any thread by you in this group.
Ahh... you posted in the IE7 group and you did get an answer.
( by Frank Saunders, to which you replied, though it doesn't seem to
be what you wanted)

You forgot to answer my question: Have you tried Jon's other
suggestions?

OK. I will read your new one here as, I am sure, will Jon.
