Task Manager shuts down after 0.5 seconds

Hope you can help. a few programs (task manager,
msconfig.exe, regedit) only open for a fraction of a
second before closing themselves. Why is this? I have run
virus check and adaware check and still seem to be getting
nowhere. An ysuggestions?

Found problem. AVG anti virus software was not detecting
any viruses. Downloaded WinPatrol which showed a few
suspicious programs. Disabled these, rebooted and re run
AVG. Found 10 (!) viruses and cleaned system. Back to
normal now.
