Task Manager opens only for a second and then closes

I am having performance issues, and when I hit control
alt delete, Task manager pops open for a second and
closes. I have determined that the processes are causing
performance to run at 100% - but I don't know how to fix
or shut down some processes without access to Task
manager. Can someone help?

thanks

This may be from spyware, a worm, a virus, and so on. So
run a updated scan for these bad items. Also you should
run the disk cleanup tool, and look in the msconfig.exe
tool for the startup programs which you don't want in.
You can run System File Checker tool to scan all of the
protected files on your computer:
Click Start > Run and type: CMD, and hit enter.
In the open box, type; sfc /scannow (including space) and
then click OK. Note
that you may be prompted to insert the Windows XP
installation CD-ROM.
