The task bar properties has a shaded "Hide inactive
icons" check box. How do I correct or reenable the
properties to allow customization (adding the Hidden
inactive icons)?

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explore
r

Look in the right pane for a value called NoAutoTrayNotify. If found, right
click this value and select Delete.

If you're running XP Pro, you can also access this setting via the Group
Policy Editor (GPEDIT.MSC), User Configuration, Administrative Templates,
Start Menu and Taskbar, Turn off notification area cleanup. Set this policy
to Not Configured.
