Or
Put your Mouse on the top edge of it until it turn to <----> upward and
resize your Taskbar, then right click on it and select lock the Taskbar.

Nass, thanks, but I've tried that already. The taskbar only increases size,
but does not gets smaller, when I do that (or it disappears completely).

Hi Luis,
I understood what you are experiencing!, I think you have a look in the
Quick launch, try to put the Pointer/Mouse/cursor on the end edge of the
Quick launch Box/window and try to expand it.
Or try to turn the quick launch OFF by doing this:
Right click the Start >> Select properties.
On the Taskbar and Start menu window click on taskbar and you will see:
[ ] Show Quick Launch <= uncheck it and click Apply then OK.
Does it help.
Try to remove some applications from the Quick Launch to reduce the size if
you want to keep the Quick launch on your taskbar.

Hi Nass, thanks again.

Unhappily, it does not help: 1st, I want to have the Quick Launch bar. 2nd,
the problem is not with the amount of programs open 8even resident ones):
this happens with all the programs shut down, all icons out of the Quick
Launch bar or Task bar;

I did now what you suggest, and managed to reduce the height of the task bar
- only the running programs' icons are there (outlook and IE). but if I check
the quick Launch on, the height doubles again.

And i can't move or resize the quick launch bar, which is clearly what is
causing the problem.

If you have toolbars on the task bar on multiple lines, you won't be
able to reduce the task bar size to fewer than that number of lines.
Put all the toolbars on one line first.

Hi Luiss,
Try this:
Leave the Quick launch check box checked as is!.
Right click on the Taskbar and uncheck/unselect the Lock The Taskbar option.
Then with your Pointer on the chevron of the Quick Launch try to Expand away
from the start Menu say like this:

[Start].:| Outlook, IE,.....etc|:. <- put the pointer on this side of the
chevron and drag away ->.
Resize the taskbar to fit and then Lock it in the same way you unlocked it.
