Take Ownership of folder Problem

I have just loaded a backup of acronis true image and tried to copy a
folder. The problem is windows says I need to take ownership. I followed the
instructions on microsofts web site, that is right click folder, click
properties, security tab, advanced, owner. The problem is when I click the
owner tab I get a warning that says 'you only have permission to view the
current owner on [NAME]'. Then there is a box which is supposed to contain
names. The problem is there are no names listed. The current owner is listed
as the name of the computer. I should add that I reformated and reinstalled
XP pro. The backup is from the computer before I reformated.

Try to give your user full control privileges over that folder (from an administrator account, obviously). Next, once logged on with your user account, try to take ownership of the folder.

If you wouldn't like to give your user full control privileges over the folder, there is a special permission designed to take ownership of files/folders: From the Security tab click Advanced, select your user (add it if it is not listed), click Edit and place a check next to 'Take Ownership' permission.

Hi Martin I am the only user and I use the admin account I setup after
installing XP. It is the only account on the computer (other than the built
in accountsxp sets up). The first part of your answer is no good as I said
I can't take ownership of the folder. On the security tab ADD and REMOVE are
blanked out.

As to your second part I can't do anything in the advanced tab other than
view. On the permissions tab ADD and REMOVE are greyed out and EDIT is the
only selectable button and when I click EDIT I can't change anything on the
window that pops up.

Hi Daniel

No good. i created another admin account but I cant change permissions for
the folder. Whatever I trry and do i get told I can only view the folder not
change it. I think I read somewhere its because the computers SID has
changed.

Create another administrator user and, from the built-in Administrator
account, give it permissions over the folder. Once done, you should be able
to take ownership if you log on as the new administrator account.
