take a long time to restart comp.

Hi

I been having a problem with taking a long time restarting
the comp. after i installed in win. 2k... I don't have
many programs running and I already scanned my whole
system and there are no viruses, I used to use win 98 and
it restarted much faster than this, my main problem is
that when i do a start>>shut down>> restart or shut down,
it will say "saving your settings" for like 2 mins b4 it
finally say "windows is shutting down"... I was a t my
friends' house and when their comps are restarting, they
only stay on that "saving your settings" line for less
than 5 seconds and jump right into "windows is shutting
down" and then the physical restarting process, I'm
wondering if tehre are any pro out there that can help me
out with this newbie problem... thanks a lot in advance,
really appreciated.

Most likely you have installed a software that refuses to exit.

This is common to:

* bad drivers
* frozen applications
* bad applications that use a tray icon
* services with a user interface.

If you are a newbie, here is the simpler version:

You probably installed an old or bad application. Get a tool such as
MSConfig or some other tool that allows you to list all applications that
start on your computer and elliminate them one by one. At some point, you
will find the link between the stall and a certain application.
