Tabs going wierd

I have set up a line with a load of tabs, and for some
unknown reason when I press tab sometimes (but not
always) it gives me two tab stops. This is not a
keyboard error.

Anyone explain this to me?

If the text extends past the tab stop you were aiming for (sometimes this
isn't accurately displayed), then the tab will go to the next tab stop.
