Table of Contents Formatting Trouble

Hi there;

I am currently working on a Word Document that was been handed to
several people prior to me. As a result, the formatting was all over
the place, and inconsistent. I've done my best to fix these issues,
and everything appears to be fine except the table of contents. When
I insert the TOC, the tabs seem to be incorrect, and I cannot manually
fix them to my liking. As it stands right now, when I put the TOC in
initially (no manual fixes), the numbers are on the left hand side and
the section titles are on the right.

Is there some way to bring the page I want the TOC on back to its
default formatting before I insert the TOC?

Thanks for any insight!

For any changes to the TOC to be saved and stick after a refresh, all changes
must be saved in the TOC1 style. TOC2 for second level, TOC3....
If the styles is not changed and saved, all manual changes will be removed
upon  refresh.

Hi again;

Dean - I actually used that link step-by-step while I made the TOC.
My trouble seems to be that the heading and page numbers in the TOC
are on the same tab such that the text is right aligned and the page
number lands on a line below. While I'm sure this is a simple issue
to resolve, I've tried all kinds and have had no luck finding out how
to resolve this.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you!

It sounds as if either the first tab stop (which would be at the hanging
indent, if any) is missing or it is too close to the left edge. If you have
chapter numbers, they are overrunning it (for a description of this, see
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/NumberAlignment.htm. You need to add the
tab stop (if missing) or move it (if too far to the left).
