Systray Volume Control gone

I played some on-line MIDI files today, the noticed later that the
Volume Control is missing from the Systray. I opened Control Panel ->
Sounds and Audio Devices and tried to reactivate the Systray Volume
Control but got an error message saying that sndvol32.exe was not
available. How can I correct this problem? I can still play MIDI files
but some of my programs that use sound are mute.

Win XP Pro, SP2 on a desktop computer running MS Office 2007 and a few
other rather ordinary programs.

Thanks for any suggestions. Gordon

I suppose the first thing to do is check if the file still exists.
It resides in "C:\WINDOWS\system32".

Thank you Nepatsfan, that fixed the problem. I printed out a hard copy
of these instructions from the link below and will keep them handy in
case this happens again. I'm still not able to explain what removed
the sndvol32.exe file in the first place. Some malware, maybe?

Thanks for your help, Gordon
