System Volume Control Help

I suddenly am having a problem with my system volume control: the Play
Control setting seems to be "stuck " at the lowest volume, and every
time I try to slide it up, it slides back down to zero automatically.
All the other sliders (Wave, MIDI, CD Audio, Line-In) work fine. Any
reason as to why this might be? No changes have been made to my
hardware as far as I know.

I'm having a similar problem but mine is reversed. The volume is set at max
and returns there if I try to slide it down.

I've seen quite a few people post about this same problem but not one of
them has gotten an answer!
