Cannot adjust volume

Doing a google search I found a description (from these forums) of th
same problem that I am having with xp.

The person (ann) asks:
When I attempt to adjust the volume using the slider on the
Volume tab of the Sounds and Audio Devices section of the
control panel, the volume gets louder as I drag the slider
over, and then (without even releasing the mouse button),
the volume automatically decreases as the slider moves to
it's lowest position. It's as if the volume is pegged
"low" elsewhere in the system, and the slider must reflect
that value despite my trying to adjust it. TIA for any
assistance.

It appears that no solution was ever given to her, however. Any idea
on how to fix this problem

You only see answers to questions when 1) adequate information is
presented, and 2) the answer is known. I'd say neither condition was met
for this problem.

Check your system for infection. Remove and reinstall your audio
drivers. Post the hardware and software for your sound system.

Keep in mind that no matter how good the readers of these newsgroups
are, they are not mind readers.
