\system32\ntoskrnl.exe error

i recently purchased a new motherboard/cpu combo to upgrade my computer.
i installed the motherboard and everything, but when i go to boot windows i get the error message:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file.
so i tried booting from the cd and i got:
\i386\ntkrnlmp.exe
error code 7
i tried looking around in other posts but none really seem to apply to my situation, can anybody help?
