system will not boot from XP Home Ed Upgrade CD

Gentelmen:

August 2003: I purchased a Think Pad R40 which
came with Windows XP Home Ed

It has recently become a little slow

February 2006: I purchase a copy of Windows XP
Home Ed w/SP2 (the CDrom)

I was told that I could simply insert the CD
into the CD drive and reboot from the CD.
My ThinkPad refused to boot from that CD.

I thought my ThinkPad was OK, but to test it...

I tried a Knoppix 3.6 bootable CD. It boots.
I tried a Knoppix 4.0 bootable CD. It boots.

I go back to my freshly purchased Windows XP
Home Ed w/SP2 CD. It does NOT boot.

I give up.

I boot into my sick Windows XP Home Ed and
double click D:\setup.exe . I use this access
and re=fresh Windows XP.

Accessing the CD in this manner does not offer
all the options that other people mention.
Thank you,
Charles

The Windows XP CD is bootable once you
open the motherboard's BIOS and set the
CD drive as the very first bootable drive.

The OP's message states that the Knoppix disks boot. Therefore he has the
computer set to boot from the CD drive first.

I don't have any experience with the IBM Thinkpad, but will Dell computers
pressing F12 during startup will signal the CD to boot.
