System Standby-Need many replies

Since I downloaded some non-critical Windows Updates, my
computer will not go into standby mode unless it is set
to do so before the screen saver comes on, or the monitor
shuts off, which is pointless. I used system restore and
got rid of the updates but the problem persists. Five
Dell techs have been unsuccessful in helping me. One had
me run a program with the re-install disk. No combination
of time settings make a difference. I'll take all the
ideas I can get.
Thanks, thanks, thanks,
Bruce

Open Device Manager, Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers
Click on each instance of USB Root Hub, Power Management
Tab. There should be two check boxes, Clear the check from the
box entitled "Allow Windows to Turn off this device to save Pwr."

i'm not sure if you're having the same problem that i had
but maybe you are, and even if not, the place where you
fix it may be the same. i had a problem where my display
would shut off instead of running my screen saver after i
updated my computer's BIOS for installing a new battery.
often when you update your computer, windows will change
your power management settings, so if you right click on
your desktop and open the proporties menu, or if you go
to your control panel, in both places there should be a
power management area. there you can set how long your
computer must be idle for for it to go into hibernate or
standby or shut down or whatever you want it to do, and
if you have a laptop, there are different settings for
running off a battery and having your power cord plugged
into the wall.

Why would you need many replies? Only one correct one is needed.

Reinstall your video drivers, and reboot. (Make sure those drivers are
up-to-date and intended for XP.)
