System slow down caused by update?

My PC has recently had a performance problem. The most noticeably symptom in
general use is that the Windows startup sound is stuttering, but other than
that it seems fine until I try to play a 3D game. Games that I have played
for months or years are suddenly unplayably choppy, real bad framerates,
stuttering sound.

This all happened after I installed WGA and a few updates that were
available at the same time. I hadn't changed video/audio drivers, there is no
dust in my PC, I've checked for virus/spyware infection, I've cleaned the
registry, I've done everything except a re-install or remove the updates.

There seem to be others having this problem from what I can see on the WGA
forum. Has anyone else with this problem managed to fix it?

Better to download and install updated audio/video drivers from the
manufacturer's sites instead of getting those via windows update.

As SS says - always use the manufacturer's driver updates. MS only offer
Digitally Signed drivers, so I understand, and they can be years old.
For example, I recently bought a new CRT monitor - on initial install used
MS driver which was dated 2001???
The manufacturers is Dec 2005.

I'd already installed the latest video drivers (that's one thing I keep up to
date myself!) but haven't checked the audio drivers.

I'll do so and see if it helps. I'll also check the BIOS and other drivers
as well to see if there are other drivers that have been 'updated' without my
realising it.

Oh well, mutliple hours spent trying to fic my PC rather than killing head
crabs...
