Since we know nothing about your computer, the security software you have
installed (Norton products will interfere), or the history of the machine,
all I can suggest is that you look over the information at MVP Bert
Kinney's System Restore pages to see if anything is applicable to your
situation.

I don't know who Barbara is but my PC is XP/SP2/Home. Doing a SR in Safe
Mode knowing you can't go back makes me kind of nervous. But it wouldn't
work otherwise. Sadly, it didn't fix the problem for us.

If System Restore worked in Safe Mode and not in Regular Mode, then
something you have running in Regular Mode interfered. As a guess, I'd
vote
for the culprit being Zone Alarm as it has a lot of issues and is no
longer
recommended. I'm also not fond of PC-Tools and seeing as it has just now
been purchased by Symantec, AFAIC that's a death knell for any quality it
may have had.

I usually recommend NOD32, Kaspersky, Avast, or Avira for antivirus
programs. The built-in Windows Firewall is adequate for most people.

Thanks, I just made note of these and will do some Googling.
The only way to discover what happened on your system (assuming this
wasn't
a one-off glitch, which it most certainly could have been), would be to:

1. Delete all System Restore points by disabling it, rebooting, and then
enable it again. This will get rid of any SR points that may be corrupted.
Then test by doing a SR in Regular Mode. If this works, you're done.

2. If you still can't do a SR in Regular Mode, do a clean boot and then
test. If SR works, add back one item at a time, testing SR after each
addition.

OK, will do.
