System Restore

Steve

Hello:

Lately, when I've tried to use system restore (I'm running XP pro) the
computer goes through the process, but on restart I get the message that the
restore failed. This has happened consistently on several occasions. Any
ideas?

Basically it means exactly that. It cannot restore because something in the
registry has changed. What changed cannot be determined.

If you ever set a restore point during a new installation it can cause this
scenario. Example: Start an install, a box pops up requiring your input, you
think Oops, better set a restore point right now before continuing, then you
continue the installation. Could also be an installation that required
rebooting to complete but didn't do so automatically or notify you.

IIRC your existing restore points won't work any more and you'll have to
clear them and start over... but check the MS knowledgebase (or maybe
someone here knows a way around it) to confirm that before deleting them.

Hi Steve,

By chance are there any Norton products installed?
If so read this.

Does System Restore function in Safe Mode?

Thanks. I don't use ANY virus programs and thus never had that situation.
Will investigate more thoroughly before I respond next time..

Now problem. :) I have never used an AV application that caused this either.

Normally when folks find that System Restore fails to restore it's when they
need it most. So if restore points can be salvaged, that's a good thing!
