System restore XP Home SP2

D

David

I have been trying to fix SR on my machine with no luck and would
appreciate any ideas.

In the system restore tab of system properties only my second hdd (D)
appears with no settings button. Turning SR on and off from here makes
no difference.

If I turn SR off using regedit the C drive and settings buttons reappear
and are active. (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore --- DisableSR=1)
But once SR is turned on again the situation reverts to its original state.
I have tried to reinstall from sr.inf in the inf folder and when
prompted point to the i386 folder which I have unzipped from the SP2
download (full). The first file (sr.dl_ ?) is accepted but I get a
failed to copy message for the next file (srclient.dl_) and all
subsequent files.

Thanks in advance,
David M

Hi David,

This is often caused by, but not limited to the install of a new
physical drive to the system. There are two known solutions to this
problem.

The first solutions was discovered by MVP Ramesh Srinivasan. This is the
recommended, and least destructive method.

Drive letter missing in System Restore settings page?
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/srdrives.htm

The second is to Reinstall System Restore.

Warning, all restore points will be lost in this process.

In your case, it may be necessary to create a new XP cd which includes
SP-2 updates.

Hi Bert,

thanks for the speedy reply.

Renaming the drivetable.txt file and rebooting generated a new file with
the same details. Problem still the same.

Tried reinstalling SR but using a slipstreamed XP SP2 CD this time.
Again the first file copied ok (sr.sy_) but srclient.dl_ and subsequent
files refused to copy even though they are visible. I originally applied
SP2 from the full download but also made a slipstream cd at the time for
future reference. I noticed a big difference in the size of the i386
folders and was hopefull there for a moment:)

Within the folder that has the drivetable.txt file there are mutiple
folders, RP582-592, which also have copies of this file. Should these be
renamed too?

Thanks,
David

Drive letter missing in System Restore settings page?

After my previous post I found an article suggesting that after stopping
and disabling the SR service all the contents of the System Volume
Information folder should be deleted and a reboot applied. While trying
this I realized that I had only applied the solution provided by Ramish
to the C drive. So I went ahead and deleted the contents of SVI on the D
drive and after rebooting all is now back to normal. I can't say for
certain if his solution would have worked if I had applied it to all
drives but I suspect it would.
I think this procedure should include a prominent reminder to apply it
to all disk drives and an extra step, before reinstalling the system
restore, to delete the folder contents if deleting drivetable.txt
doesn't work.

Many thanks for your assistance its very much appreciated.

Regards,
David

I suspect it would be necessary to delete the drivetable.txt file from
within the SVI on all drives/partitions that System Restore is set to
monitor.

It is not normally necessary to delete the contents of the SVI folder to
reinstall SR.

From you previous reply, you indicated the reason SR would not install
was that several files could not be located. I don't see how deleting
the contents of the SVI folder would make a difference in locating the
missing files.

No, I thought I explained that the files were available both from SP2
and the slipstream CD but refused to copy. I didn't intend to imply that
deleting the contents of SVI would make missing files locatable. In fact
I didn't intend to imply that any files were missing. Rereading my posts
, especially the second one, I think I succeeded.
