System Restore Restoration Incomplete

Apparently something in my Win XP SP2 is corrupted. I can only boot
into Safe Mode.

I tried to use system restore several times (requesting different
dates). Each time I get "restoration incomplete" with no more
explanation.

I found a couple of articles which say that Norton Antivirus 2006 and
later may be the cause, and should be temporarily turned off while
doing system restore. I actually have NAV 2005, but I suppose that
doing LiveUpdate might have imported the misbehavior. It's worth a try
at least.

But NAV in Safe Mode has "limited capabilities" so I can't carry out
the instructions for turning it off.

Any advice on how to get out of this corner?

TIA

Hi,

There are several reasons this may occur. Let's take a look at Event Viewer
for any System Restore logs that may have been created recently that may
help us diagnose the problem.

Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter.
Click on System in the left pane.
Click the gray title “Source” at the top of the source name column in the
right pane to sort by source name, look for "sr" and "srservice".
Double click on each of these events, then click on the button below the two
arrows in the upper right corner. This will copy the event information to
the clipboard. Paste the information for each of the two event here. There’s
no need to post duplicate Event ID’s.

How do I use the Event Viewer to search for System Restore logs?

No RUN icon on safe mode, but got there from command line.

Six "srservice", zero "sr". All had ID=111. Here's one:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: SRService
Event Category: None
Event ID: 111
Date: 2/15/2007
Time: 10:17:29 PM
User: N/A
Computer: TCPTOWER
Description:
A restoration to "System Checkpoint" restore point failed. No changes
have been made to the system.

Use Srdiag.exe tool to diagnose why the system could not be restored. Run
"%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\srdiag.exe" and wait until the command prompt
disappears (it may take a few minutes depending on the number of restore
points stored on that computer).

Then open "%SystemRoot%\system32\restore", extract the CAB and take a look
at the different reports it contains.

To troubleshoot a "System Restore Restoration Incomplete" error, you should
analyze the SR-RstrLog.log file in first place.

Hope this helps.

Assume you meant reappear; indeed it took several minutes

OK, but the truth is I have virtually no idea what to look for, or how
to interpret what I see.

It's 431 KB.

Is there some specific thing to search for, or does it need a lot of
tracing (which I probably cannot do)?

Something I neglected to mention was that I had recently succumbed to
nagging, and permitted installation of Windows Media Player 11 and
Internet Explorer 7.

Uninstalling WMP 11 made no difference, but after uninstalling IE 7 I
*was* able to complete a System Restore. So now I can boot normally.

Now what? Is there a way to make XP System Restore and IE 7 co-exist?
It's not terribly important, since I use Firefox and only keep IE
around for special situations, but still I'd like to be able to have
IE 7 rather than 6.

IE7 and System Restore coexist quite well on my computers, so I doubt
that IE7 is the culprit. More likely something else has become corrupt,
and damaged your System Restore functionality. Did you try turning off
System Restore on all drives, then restarting your computer, then
re-enabling System Restore? That will kill all of your past Restore
Points, but it should clean up any problem areas.

Also, you need a newer Antivirus program. NAV 2005 is too old.
