Hey Gang, Look, I'm no expert, but have been at this since
there was no "WWW" to speak of, we used WFW3.11, Archie,
Veronica, and a 340 MB HDD seemed huge. So, I've been
around, and educated myself on XP using Ed Bott's excellent
book. A friend has teeenage kids, who downloaded some P2P
file swapping programs. I got rid of the main programs
(WINXE and Kazaa),but some miscellaneous junk would not
uninstall, neither with the "Add/Remove Programs", or going
into Windows Explorer and deleting the files and folders
indivdually. The main bugger was a "Smart Shopper" (or
something like that) program, and another one that caused
an error dialog box to show on boot up saying that
"Microsoft virtual machine must be installed..." After
doing all the tricks I know, I figured why not just go back
and select a System Restore point before this garbage was
downloaded? Seemed like a reasonable enough idea, and I had
used System Restore on another friend's machine, with
perfect results. Well, NONE of the automatically set
Restore Points works. You are only allowed to use 1 of the
3 Administrator Accounts to sign on, which one works
depends on a particular Restore Point I chose. Even when it
seems to work fairly well, the desktop is almost barren,
and things like Control Panel, Help & Support, almost every
program takes 30-45 seconds to load, if at all.Any ideas,
or is it time to put the XP CD in, boot up and select
"repair system"? I configured the boot sequence so it reads
the CD drive first... As I said, I'm not a beginner. But I
don't want to do a repair/reinstall if I don't have to...
Thanks In Advance, JJO
