System Restore not working

I get this error message when I try to access System Restore

An exception occurred while trying to run
“C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL
“C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysdm.cplâ€,Systemâ€

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2. I recently had to
replace my hard drive, and I'm worried that Windows lost some files. This
seems to be the only thing on the system that's "broken", but it's an
important one.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have had no luck with system restore, ever. For me it just doesn't
work. The only thing that works for me is a good, recent image from
Drive Image or Ghost. I would advise people to not rely on system
restore, but instead make images often and regularly before altering
your system.

Dan,
Run MSCONFIG, look at the Services Tab. Make sure System Restore Service is enabled (checked) and shows as running.
Be sure each of your disk drives has at minimum 200 MB of free space.
This is by way of a quick check. Post back with results.

Dan,
It should show Running.
Do this. Select RUN option from main Start menus. Type in
SERVICES.MSC <enter-key>

Review the line for System Restore Service. It needs to show Started under the Status column, with Startup Type of Automatic.
If need be, while in the Services control section, you can Start the service, or even stop & restart the service.

Suggest you do an in-place upgrade or an in-place installation for purposes of "repair".
It needs to go to the same partition as before , and the same directory as before.

Usually for example XP is on C drive and is on folder/directory \Windows or \WINNT.

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. You do that from the pc BIOS setup screen. You specify CDROM as the first drive to boot from.

Insert your Windows XP CD into your CD-ROM drive, and then restart your pc.

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your
screen, press a key to boot pc from the XP CD.

When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen,
press ENTER:
To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is displayed. Do NOT select this option.

On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 function key to agree to it.

Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP (in your case, the one you wish to repair) is selected in the box, and then press the R key to repair XP.

Follow the instructions on the screen.
