Restore fix information

I recently cloned to a new larger HD and made it the boot drive. I had many
problems which group helped with but wish to expound on one.
Restore did not work. Gave "exception occurred while trying to run "
c:\windows\system32\shell32\shell32.dll,control_rundll"c:\windows\system32\sysdm.cpl,system"

I found many so called fixes, radically different, on Google but this
worked and is simple:
http://berth.mvps.org/html/reinstall.html

If you need to find the two required files for your version of SP-1-2-3
simply open a new windows explorer.

Yes, Bert Kinney's site has some of the best information on System
Restore that's available. But let me point out that the URL above is
wrong. It doesn't begin with "berth" but with bertk." The "K" is an
abbreviation for "Kinney."

You are so right. I hope anyone interested will see your correction and
follow that path.

I tried the steps outlined in the link you provided about how to re-install
system restore in XP. I can't get all the way through the steps. When the
"files needed" box appears, I navigate to the first file it wants and that's
not a problem. When I navigate to the second file and click on OK, the
"files needed" box disappears and I have to start the process over again. I
can't get past pointing to the second file. I do not have an XP CD - it did
not come with my computer. I don't have a SP2 pack CD either - those files
were downloaded with a Windows update. I do have all of the files listed on
that webpage that are needed to re-install, and all of them are where they
are supposed to be in my C drive, but I can't complete the re-install as
instructed on that webpage, so I am at a complete loss here now. The last
thing I want to do is wipe out everything on my C drive and have to load all
programs, etc., again. I started having problems with System restore after
ridding my computer of a virus and after loading SP3, which I have since
uninstalled. System Restore says it can't protect my computer, and it also
will not let me disable it. I had read somewhere that disabling it,
rebooting, then enabling it again and rebooting would solve the problem but I
can't disable it to try that fix. So, any chance someone has another
suggestion for a System Restore fix ?

All I can say is the procedure from the page worked for me. I pasted the
needed file addresses in where it asked for a file I had previously found
them in my directory using windows explorer.. Hopefully someone else can
give further comment as I know how hard I worked to find a working solution
always worried that the cure might cause further problems.

Well, I wish I knew what I am doing wrong. I tried that install again and
this time got to the sixth file requested before the "files needed" box
disappeared. I don't get any error messages during this process and I don't
get any message that says I need to restart my computer. I am at a complete
loss here. :(
