System Restore Failure - Urgent Help

I've been 'losing' data recently, so I thought that by using System Restore,
I could get around the problem. I've tried to use SR on numerous occassions,
but no matter what date (and yes, the files appear to load sometimes), once
rebooted there's a message to tell me that SR had failed and was incomplete.
BUT it doesn't say why! Is there something I should have done, or be doing
prior to using this utility?
