System restore error

Just got a newer computer, was using 98 and this one has xp pro, so I
thought I would make a restore point before I started adding programs. When
I try I get an error so I went to system properties in the control panel to
check and see if restore was on or not and when I click on the system
restore tab I get the error below, any ideas on this? As I said I am new to
windows XP. Thanks

Hi Paul,

Go to Start - Run and paste the following command then press enter.

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Does System Restore open?

I get the same thing as when I go to start, program, ... system restore

System Restore Application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We
are sorry for the inconvenience.

Hello Bert, I have the identical problem as Paul B has described above and my
errors are exactly as he has printed them. I tried your suggestion of
re-installing system restore. I get the error now:System Restore Application
has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience.
my system is XP pro updated with service pack 1 and service pack 2. My copy
of xp pro came with the computer I bought assembled locally.
restore has never worked for me on this machine, tho on another machine with
ME, worked fine. Thanks for any help you may have.
